Dark Tea / Hei Cha

In China the word for dark is Hei and the word for tea is Cha.

Dark tea / Hei Cha / 黑茶 has a long history of use dating back to China approximately 5,000 years ago.

Dark Tea  is made through post fermentation from the stacking of the raw materials. Over time the colour of the raw materials darken, this is how the Dark Tea gets its name.

Dark Tea is derived from the plant species Camellia sinensis which is the Latin name for tea.

Dark Tea has a mellow and unique taste. Compared to green tea some would say it is strong.

Dark tea is beloved by Tibetan, Mongol and Uygur people and considered a necessity by them as it provides numerous health benefits.

1. Vitamin and mineral supplements

Dark Tea contains rich vitamins, minerals and nutrients. There are also antioxidants, proteins, amino acids, and carbohydrates.

2. Digestive Aid

The caffeine, vitamins, amino acids and phospholipids in the Dark Tea helps the body to digest and regulate the fat metabolism.

Dark Tea improves the overall balance of bacteria in the digestive system and aids digestion to relieve flatulence and indigestion.

The caffeine stimulation can enhance the secretion of gastric juice, which increases appetite and helps digestion.

3. Lowers Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fat like substance with a waxy consistency that is produced by the liver.

Over time cholesterol accumulates and narrows the blood vessels causing atherosclerosis

The risk of blood clots that lead to heart attacks and strokes is increased.

Dark Tea is high in polysaccharides that help reduce the LDL (Bad) Cholesterol and increase the HDL (Good) Cholesterol.

Dark Tea is an anticoagulant by promoting fibrinolysis which helps prevent the blood clotting.

4. Reduces Blood Pressure

Dark Tea contains theanine and catechins that help soften and relax the blood vessels. This process increases the size of blood vessels which allows the blood to circulate easier which helps lower blood pressure.

It was observed between May 1990 to May 1991, 55 retired military personnel from the The Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital had high cholesterol. After continuous use Dark Tea for 180 days (3 g daily) 50 of the 55 military personnel had their cholesterol and blood pressure significantly reduced.

5. Antioxidants and Cancer Prevention

Free radicals are constantly created by the human body. Dark Tea is rich in antioxidant substances such as catechins, tea pigments, flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, D , carotene, zinc, manganese, elements of copper and selenium. Studies show that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer.

6. Lowers the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Dark Tea has the highest content of polysaccharides compared to other types of tea. Polysaccharides may benefit people with diabetes because they help retard absorption of glucose.

7. Antimicrobial

Antimicrobial is a substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans. Theaflavin in Dark Tea has showed antimicrobial activities at nanomolar levels, and was more active than medicinal antibiotics, such as tetracycline or vancomycin, at comparable concentrations.

8. Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation helps your body fight infection and clear away damaged tissue. But inflammation can become a chronic condition if your body fails to shut off this reaction, or activates it when there is no apparent trigger.

Thearubigins are a major component of Dark Tea. Studies in mice have found that thearubigins  helped reduce inflammation in  bowel disease.

9. Detoxification

Water is the most natural way to detoxify your body. Dark Tea contains up to 4% caffeine, it acts on the kidney as a diuretic to increase urine and help eliminate toxins.

Pu-erh tea, is a special type of post fermented dark tea variety.

Post-fermentation is a tea production style in which the tea leaves undergo a microbial fermentation process after they are dried and rolled.

Pu-erh is available as loose leaf or in various compressed forms as a tea brick.

There are two different styles of China pu-erh tea.

Sheng Pu-erh

Sheng pu-erh, or green (also called raw), which is the original, traditional form. The Sheng types are those in the process of gradual darkening through exposure to the environmental elements. These type are becoming more difficult to source and are more rare than the Shou type of pu-erh

Shou Pu-erh

Shou pu-erh (also called cooked), is a recent style which was developed in the 1970's to meet the increasing demand worldwide for pu-erh teas.

The Shou type refers to those varieties that have gone through an accelerated post-fermentation proces.

Tea connoisseurs pay a high price for an old vintage.

Certain selections from either type can be stored for maturity before consumption nand they are labelled with year and region of production.

Pu-erh Weight Loss - Shrink Fat & Boost Metabolism

Scientific studies have shown that two antioxidant compounds: theabrownin and gallic acid activate enzymes in our body responsible for fat metabolism.

These antioxidants shrink fat tissue and help the body keep fat off weeks after ingestion.
